Cycling As Opposed To Using The Buses In New Zealand?

Travel Info
I am going to New Zealand in November with an open ticket so I can spend upto a year there.

I am seriously considering cycling around the islands instead of using the buses. ( I do need to improve on my current fitness levels)

Has anyone done this and if so what did you think?

Was it worth it?

Thanking you

Travel Tips
I've travelled a lot in NZ although I've never cycled there. The buses are great, and drivers very friendly, I suggest you try cycling, and then take a bus when you feel like it - the driver will probably stash your bike in the luggage compartment underneath. The road are far less crowded than the UK, but some of the mountain passes are scary.
Others
Drivers in NZ do not always show consideration to cyclists. The country is hilly. And you posted in Australia - General. Suggest you consult a map book - locate NZ and then look at your proposed route. I hate cycling the 1 km to work because of the traffic.... not sure I would be up for the excitement of the open roads!!!!!! Especially if you were looking to up current fitness levels..... might be a bit too ambitious.
i haven't cycled it but met people who have in the south island. they said it was very hard as it's very hilly on the S.Island, narrow roads, lots of rain. they stayed at caravan parks every night in cabins so were able to cook decent meals and have a decent night's sleep. also said a lot of dead possums on the roads - very smelly!
A couple of points to take into account if you are contemplating going around NZ on a bike.
1. The wind is ALWAYS in your face no matter which corner you turn,
2. All NZ roads are up hill all the way, both ways.
Try it, you'll find out I'm not kidding.
