Does everyone in Australia drink like a fish?

Travel Info
We have a friend staying here in the US from Aust. and everything we do he expects there to be drinking. And not just a beer-he's appalled that we don't get Jim & Coke in a can here. It was a horrible shock that we don't have liquor at our race-tracks on a Friday evening race. His second night here he drank 1/3 of a bottle of Jim Beam and passed out in my yard. We are broing cause we go to local little pubs, not big raging clubs with hundreds of people. Is this normal Australian behavior or does he need to grow up?

Travel Tips
Someone called him an alpha male. By his behaviour I'd put him at about gamma, maybe delta. When I was younger I used to drink a bit, but not like your friend and I did not expect a bar around every corner. On one occasion only I came close to passing out but did not quite manage it. I'd say he is either young and silly (and has no manners) or he's got a problem with the booze and has no manners. You can keep in in the US, we may not want him back.
Others
He sounds like a typical grown-up child. We've got plenty of the home-grown variety.
I am an Australian and I think your friend is being quite rude!! He sounds young and immature. If he is staying with you and you are taking him out he should appreciate it rather than criticising. It is definitely not appropriate to tell somebody (or imply) that they are boring when you are staying with them nor is it OK to go to somebody's house and drink until you pass out. This applies for Australian culture and just about any other culture I can think of.
Let me ask you a question.... Does everyone in the US drink like a fish? Because from what you hear and see on TV, it could look that way.

People are people, and everyone is different. I'm an Aussie living in Canada, and I don't drink very much. But everything is subjective, so to me, people in North America drink a lot.
Are you comparing your friend to your own standards? Or trying to fit him into a stereotype of an Australian Alpha-male?
It is up to the individual on how much one drinks... don't judge by the country they are from.
your friend is either a real pisshead(drunk) or trying to show off
some people in Australia drink a lot but not all & not all the time
i may drink 1 night a week with friends when out but not till i pass out or my friends either small clubs & pubs suit us fine
Now I'm not trying to be rude either, but what you've got staying with you is what we call a 'yobbo'. There is no way to get through to these people, they think that every waking moment is an opportunity to get blotto, and they can't behave themselves when they do. There's nothing you can do except tell him he needs to stop using you and to at least pay for his own grog. What a layabout. I hope you have other Aussie friends who can show you the other side of our population.

Yes, there are people here who love to drink, but there are others who drink in moderation or not at all, so please don't let this guy convince you that he's a typical specimen.

Leave him in the yard next time he passes out. Make sure the dog sleeps out there too, just to keep him warm.
