Is snorkeling a bad idea in Cairns during July? I'm very afraid of the cold.? |
Travel Info Originally our plan is to go during late March. But my friend got sick. We are thinking if we should postphone the trip. Or I may actually have to go on my own. Thanks a lot for the info. Travel Tips Winter: June - August During winter the water temperature drops slightly to 25C/77F degrees This time of the year is generally regarded as the most pleasant in every sense of the word - low rainfall, comfortable temperatures during the day, and cool nights. The days are sunny, and even though this is the coldest time of the year, it remains hotter than many places around the world in summer. Others Snorkeling is a great idea! Just don't hassle a stingray... water will not be too cold then What cold? You must be nuts to think that Cairns is going to be cold in July. You want cold, you go to Queenstown in New Zealand or Thredbo in Australia in July. Oh, and take your skis or a snowboard. Probably no. The average temperature will be around 26 degrees, and it can't go under 22 degrees. I grew up in Cairns and the water is never, never, never cold. July is actually a great time to snorkel and dive as the water is usually very clear. If you are worried about the slight chill in the water then I suggest that you hire a wetsuit and swim in that as it will make all the difference.... I dived quite a lot in winter and it was great...never with a wetsuit for the cold, more for protection from the coral incase I swam a little close. Have the best time in Cairns, make sure that you check out the Daintree to the north and the Tablelands to the west. Milla Milla Falls is really nice and a great place to spot wildlife at night... Other nice places are the lava tubes in Chillagoe and the black mountains on the way to Cooktown... If you dont have much time make sure that you go to Hartley's Creek Crocodile Farm on the way to Port Douglas...its the best croc show in Australia - I can guarantee it. You wont see anything like this anywhere else in Australia... It never gets cold in Cairns so you have no problems. |
