Travel Info What would be the best city to stay in for a first visit to Australia? Good hotels? Travel Tips I would recommend Canberra - the capital of Australia very nice place - the cities on the coast are too busy, too noisy, too many people, too many traffic jams, too polluted Canberra - you could walk, ride a bike, catch a bus, plenty of sidewalk cafes, markets, sceneries, museums, flower shows, art - you can stay at any hotel Others The best city would depend on what you're interested in doing. Sydney has great beaches and of course the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge. Melbourne is the "cultural and sporting capital"... I don't know where you're traveling from or if you're bringing children etc... I can tell you to figure on about an 18 hour flight from the east coast of the US. Then add on the time to clear customs, catch a taxi to your hotel etc... That could be maybe another 2 hours. If you've never done a long haul flight maybe you should pick one of the cities closest to you. Also I've noticed what is considered a 4 or 5 star hotel in Australia/New Zealand is more like what the is considered a 3 or 4 in the states. Once again the hotel would depend on what YOU want. What services are you expecting? Currency exchange? Room service? Conceirge? A travel desk to book tours? Casino? Pool? Restaurant on site? Close to mass transit? Pick the ones you can't live without and locate the hotels that have that. Then read the reviews - orbitz is a good place to find hotel reviews. They're written by other travelers. |
