What is so fantastic about Wanaka, NZ?

Please don't get me wrong, I took a little cruise up to Wanaka the other day, expecting something to totally outdo the very amazing Queenstown - and rolled into a little lakeside town with, erm, pretty much nothing in it but a few houses.
Yes, beautiful lake and mountains - but judging from the hype, I expected some kind of Paris of New Zealand. Or is that pretty much on its way and if I visit again in a year or five, the place will look its part?

Its mainly just scenic, its close to a skifield and was a good place for a cheap holiday home, until it got popular......
Its definatly being developed- just like queenstown.

Hey! I love Wanaka. There's great weather there and it just feels like the perfect place for a hoilday house. People are nice and friendly, views are amazing.

But yes I know it is a lot like other places in the Lakes District.

Hey! There are only two types of people in Wanaka - -apart from the permanent residents.
They are:
Loopies, and Jafas.

Translation into vernacular: Loopy, a tourist; Jafa, an Aucklander.
