I am planning a three week trip to Australia beginning this fall. I intend to stay on the east coast, with the exception of a short package to Uluru by plane which is $550. For the remaining time, what is reasonable amount to have on hand, staying mostly in hostels with my own food, but in a good resort in the Whitsundays for a few nights? Thanks in advance!

it is really hard to give an indication - i would budget about $200+ per day maybe all up about $4000 (at least!) if all the airfaires are pre-paid, another couple of hundred if you are paying for them when you are here. I figure it's better to have more money than not enough. Do you know what you are wanting to do whilst you are in Australia? Which states you want to visit? I would work that out and then post again and people can give you suggestions on what to do.
