Australia and airport taxes~?

i plan to go on a backpacking trip to Australia. flying to melbourne, but i have to have a transfer in Sydney first. will i have to pay some sort of domestic tax? and some people said backpacking in Australia alone is unsafe? True? I just feel that I should go ahead. Thanks for your responses.

Well, first of all if you want to stop in Sydney, you will need to pay a 10% Goods and Service Tax (GST) on top of the Domestic Airfare to Melbourne. (Usualy quoted in the price).

There may be some duties and taxes even if you don't transit through Sydney.

Backpacking in Australia is safe, it really depends on what, where, and how you plan on seeing our country. One tip, if you do find yourself in a provincial city, don't go out too late at night, as this can prove dangerous, and it's always good to let people know where you are going.

The reason people are telling you backpacking is unsafe however, is that a few years back, 2 british tourists broke down in the desert, and were kidnapped, 1 murdered and one is back in Britain all well. This was the 'Joanne Lees story'.

Backpacking alone can be dangerous in Australia. Just dont walk back to your Hotel/Hostel alone at night, particually in the Capital Citys. There are crazy people in all capitals. Make a couple of friends at your hostel and go to nightclubs/ bars with them. Then you should be safe. Having a male in your group will make you a little safer.

You wont have to pay any airport taxes at the airport.

All govenment, airport and local taxes in Australia are paid as part of your ticket.
