Mariposa that sailed from Auckland to Sydney on Saturday, July 11, 1959 Travel Tips The SS Mariposa was one of the liners of the Matson Lines, which was noted for its beautiful white cargo/passenger ships in the days when the US still had a merchant marine. That ended when flying became possible, popular and more affordable. Flying also got you where you were going a lot faster. Matson Lines used to go to Hawaii and the South Pacific on long cruises from the West Coast of the USA, as well as to and around South America.
