You have to demonstrate you are of good repute and apply for a licence before you can own a gun. Certain categories of gun are banned completely and some, such as handguns, have much greater restrictions than rifles. Storage of guns and ammunition is controlled by law, for a start they must be kept locked up. Unlike the USA where everyone seems to have a gun, people in Australia are not gun owners, certainly not in the cities. They are more common in the country. In NZ you need a license to own a gun. You cannot carry it around with you like they do in USA. It needs to be unloaded & locked up, kept separately from any ammo. Gun owners here mainly have their guns for hunting and pest control (and maybe for sport), not self defence and protection. |
