Many students who come to Vienna to learn, including opera singers and musicians, must have an understanding of German. You can't expect your host country's reputable universities to teach and test their students in a foreign language, it just doesn't happen. It's like going to Oxford and expecting to get your degree while only knowing Portuguese. It's a shame you did not decide to learn German when you first moved to Europe six years ago, especially since you are now living in a German speaking country, and I hear it's the second most popular spoken language in continental Europe. You will need it when you work for the United Nations, the more languages you speak the better chances of getting a job with them. If you do move to England (if you don't wish to leave Europe) consider taking a German language course as well and a private tudor to speed up the process if you wish to live and work in Vienna.
