I want to go to the Rio Carnival?

I have never been outside the USA, but I would really like to visit the Rio Carnival.

However, although my boyfriend speaks a little Spanish I know that they don't speak that in Brazil.

So is Brazilian similar to Spanish, or will my boyfriend and me struggle to be understood ?

Brazilians speak Portuguese. Surely you will encounter some people who speak some Spanish, but I wouldn麓t count on it. I麓d say that English would be better to use (almost everyone in the touristy areas speak English), as it more widely taught since its the international language.

Just in case, buy a Portuguese phrasebook. Try to get it in Brazilian Portuguese, as regular Portuguese is not necessarily the same. Source(s): Living in South America for the past 3+ years
