Are favelas in Brazil really that dangerous to visit?

I am planning a trip to Brazil some time next year, and would like to pay a visit to favelas in Rio. But I did receive lots of warning about this idea when I broke my plans to my friends...of course, it's only a small circle of friends--so I am here to ask you guys to give me some advice...thanx
