Travel Info Why are both french and english spoken in canada? Travel Tips We have 2 official languages here. When Canada became an independant nation it was made of french and english colonies. We like our diverse culture. Others because in quebec, citizens are called french canadian. Now I cant tell you why that section of canada is french but I have been there and the road sign are french also. The French made the 1st major European colony in Canada in the 17th century and until the British came in, "Canada" was French. But, the British broke up some colonies, sending them to France and present-day Louisiana (Named for King Louis of France. These people became Cajuns, which is derived from Acadians which is what they were in Canada). Then the American Revolution sent us Loyalists who made up Ontario and then in 1867, the Eastern colonies formed Canada and were later joined by PEI and BC etc etc. Sooo, Quebec speaks French because we're decendants of the French and the rest of Canada is forced to learn French in school but they generally don't speak it. We also have the Amerindian languages which are spoken quite frequently amongst the Native Americans They are the "official languages" of Canada, seeing that we have both French and English speaking peoples in Quebec (french) and the rest of Canada (english mainly). Long before Canada became a nation, it was basically a colony divided into two territories: the British territory and the French (New France) territory. When the British won the war over here, the British and French agreed to allow those of French descent to keep their language and religion (Roman Catholic) and the British would keep their language (English) and religion (Protestant - Anglican) without anyone harassing the other to convert. This agreement would continue when Canada became a nation in 1867. Because we can It's kinda on the order of the English/Spanish deal in the US |
