Craiglist, selling to canadians??

everytime i get a offer from a canadian buyer on something on craiglist from my ad in tacoma washington they tell me they will be paying for it from a drawn check from a u. s bank is this a scam does anyone know how this works, any info would be helpfull

I work in a bank and have worked with cheques on collection. Here is how the process works:
A cheque drawn on a Canadian bank is sent by your bank back to the Cdn Bank in question. The Cdn bank will call the maker of the cheque (Cdn buyer) for authority to pay because one-third of all cheques are fraudulent. If money is paid out, the Cdn bank WITHHOLDS their fee from the amount of the cheque. Your American bank takes a fee and this is what you are left with. If no money is paid out there is still a service charge that both banks take. The process can be 6-8 weeks. If you are lucky, it is shorter.
Many American banks do not trust cheques from foreigners (and vice versa) where cheques drawn on American banks are concerned. So if the Canadian buyer were to go into a Canadian bank and have it drawn on their American correspondent bank, your own bank may still send the cheque to the American correspondent or the Canadian bank itself. There will be charges again. This is because of the wonderfully new computer equipment we have these days that allow con artists to make fake cheques. I am not saying "don't trust anyone" but what I am saying is be careful and keep in mind that even bank tellers do NOT know of all the charges that are incurred. (I would get many calls having to educate them on our bank's procedures AND on their own bank's fees I would refer them to their own foreign collections department).
