Northern Ontario Accent? |
Travel Info what does the northern ontario accent sound like? which countries did the early settlers to northern ontario come from that helped develop the speech of northern ontario? thanks Travel Tips French is popular and widely spoken there. . . . The population is a mix of aboriginals and French. Many have got British, Irish or Scotch descent and the vast majority are of mixed ancestry. . . Source(s): I am Canadian and I have been living in Ontario for over a couple of years. . . Other Travel Tips Northern Ontario is such a vast expanse of territory taking you from Sudbury all the way to Hudson Bay to the Manitoba border. The French were the first to explore the area and many towns have a distinct french heritage. Some cities are home to large immigrant populations such as Italians, Finns, Scotts, Irish and Ukrainians. We are influenced to some degree by American television also. My accent is always thought to be American Midwest which irks me to no end even though my heritage is french, Scottish, English and Metis. I call people across northern Ontario as part of my job. There is a lot of "Newfie speak" (people from Newfoundland...I love calling them), a lot of Aboriginal accents (English spoken with Cree, Ojibway or "OjiCree" as they call it) and the odd French accents. I hear a lot of "eh"s as compared to some areas of the country. And...meaning this in a good way...not as "refined" speaking as some place such as "Toronto" or "Vancouver". The words get slurred together almost like the neighbour on "Family Guy" with the people who work in the bush. The words aren't as "clipped" as in some parts of the country. Early settlers in this area include French, Norwegian, Scottish, Ukrainian and British. |
