Visiting Canada From Alaska? |
Travel Info I want to visit Canada from Fairbanks, AK. Any ideas for weekend sightseeing or hiking trips along the route? Travel Tips Which highway? There's only one. The Alaskan Highway goes east out of Fairbanks. The next "big city" is Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory. There are number of store, exhibits and sights in Whitehorse including the "Beringia" (spelling?) Museum about 2 miles north of town and a paddle wheeler on the river right in town. If you want to get to an even more obscure place than Fairbanks or Whitehorse, you could take the "Top of the World" highway past Dawson City (nice little town on the Yukon River) and then North on the Dalton Highway all the way to Inuvik (northermost road in Canada). I enjoyed the drive and the terrain and scernery is much different than Alaska's North Slope (on the way to Barrow). The most important tip is to get "The Milepost" which is a size of medium-sized phone book and details, mile-by-mile every dang attraction, campground and turnout on all the northern highways in AK and Canada. About $25, amazon.com has it or any bookstore in Alaska does too. One of the nice stops is Laird Hot Springs. Free, easy access, nice soak to break up your 2200 mile drive (Fairbanks to Seattle). If you don't mind a few hundred miles of gravel road, I like to take the Cassier Highway instead of the whole way on the main route. It save a few miles and about 2 hours and is more spectacular scernery (you see the back of the Coast Range in Canada). But there isn't 24 hour gas, so you have double check your timing if you drive around the clock. A very different trip could be had by turning south off the Alaskan Highway at Haines Junction and driving south to Haines, Alaska. Catch the Alaska State Ferry (MUST have reservations for your car). Then take it south to Juneau or Petersburg or anywhere in SW Alaska. Or all the way to Prince Rupert, BC or Bellingham, WA. Source(s): I live in Alaska. Have taken many trip up and down the "Alcan" and most of the side roads as well. Other Travel Tips Whereabouts are you heading once you get to Canada? We would like to help you but don't know the direction you are going. Via the Alaska Highway, you mean? You want to drive through the Yukon and British Columbia? Please be more specific. |
