Travel Info

Travel Tips
Canada up until 1982 was officially still a colony of the Queen. British Nationals will not require a visa to enter the country, but you will need an acceptance letter from the school, show that you have the cash to cover tuition and living expenses, and show you plan to leave after your studies are up. If you plan to stay and work between semesters (or work during the semester), I believe that requires a work permit. You can confirm that with the Canadian High Commission in London. The link is below.

I have been out of school too long to know which universities to recommend. However, there are fine institutions all over Canada. According to the studies I saw about Computer Science programs in Canada, three universities stood out based on the number of citations they receive per year:

1) University of Waterloo (ON)

Ranked very high for their technology programs, they are located in a small city just west of Toronto, and north of Kitchener. You are not far from Niagara Falls, and getting a dorm or room should not be difficult, and won't be as expensive as in the other two cities mentioned below.

2) University of Toronto (ON)
http://www.utoronto.ca/
Toronto is a large city, the hub for airport traffic headed to USA and Europe. It is close to Niagara Falls and the has a good public transit system. The drawbacks are that the campuses are spread all over town, and you will probably pay more for lodging than some of the smaller cities.

3) University of British Columbia (BC)
http://www.ubc.ca/
Located in Vancouver, this school is overlooking the Pacific Ocean with the Rocky Mountains not far away. Breathtaking scenery and weather will be similar to UK or better...little snow unless you go to the mountains. However, it is also the most expensive place to live in Canada at the moment. Housing and living expenses will be high.

None of these universities would require any French, but you may encounter some students from Quebec, Manitoba, or New Brunswick whose mother tongue is French, so you will have the chance to understand and speak with them.

Not sure what you mean by social taboos. I can tell you Canada is pretty tolerant as a country, we have interracial marriages, nude beaches, gay and lesbian marriages, marijuana use is not legal but tolerated in some areas, although drinking or using drugs and then driving is a big no-no here (as it should be), and smokers are looked on almost as pariahs now, since they are not allowed to smoke in public buildings or even clubs and bars.

Hope that helps you some. Source(s): http://www.international.gc.ca/canada-eu...

Hey man. Canada eh? Well some of my friends who are international students at UofT pay around 20,000$CAN. Good places for computer science include: waterloo. Located in Kitchener, ONT, a pretty small town. French is not really needed in other places but Quebec. But be sure to apply sometime before the regulars since you're a transfer Good luck with your future man.
I know of 2 universities that would be beneficial to check out for Computer Science.
University of Waterloo is in Waterloo Ontario. It is been nicknamed the MIT of Canada so it might be the harder of the 2 to get into. But Waterloo is about 1 hour from Niagara give or take, and an hour from Toronto for great and easy flights to both home in England and anywhere else in North America you would want to go to.
The other one I know of is University of New Brunswick. It is located on the east coast , and doesn't have the population you are looking for but the University was worth the mention.
Well, hey, I'm an American but have spent A LOT of time in Canada so I'll share what I know...To be honest, my favorite part of Canada is Newfoundland. Poverty stricken, yes, but an absolutely beautiful place. The gov. provided an excellent college there (Memorial University) and the locals are nothing but the highest quality of people. And, just for the icing on the cake, it is a predominantly Irish culture-- you may be surprised to hear the accent!
Hello.....I live in Ontario Canada and I love it. There are so may trees and the feeling in Canada is so relaxed compaired to that of the States. I go over to the United States often and feel much better when I get back to Canada. Everything is cleaner and safer. We don't carry guns and we have laws regarding the condition of our cars and the polution that our cars produce. Our healthcare system is awesome. Where I live there are a lot of small towns and a couple citys. It's nice to be able to live out n the country and still have the conveniance of the city. Your seasons are always changing so you get to experience everything. It's also awesome if your an active person because there is always a sport to play!! Come to Canada! It's amazing!!!
