Do i need a US passport to drive to canada and mexico? |
Travel Info Based on the following paragraph and the link below do i need a passport to drive to our border countries, i am planninga vaccation The proposal would temporarily lift a requirement that U.S. passports be used for citizens flying to and from Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean and Bermuda. The rule, and its suspension, does not affect Americans driving across the Canadian or Mexican borders or taking sea cruises, although those travelers are expected to need passports beginning next year. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070608/ap_o... Travel Tips The requirement for people driving to Canada and Mexico is scheduled to go into effect January 1, 2008,so you do not need a passport to drive across the border. You will need an original copy of your birth certificate (with a municipal seal) and a government issued photo ID (your drivers license is fine) for each person traveling, however. If you are planning your trip for 2008, you WILL need a passport - given the fact that there is a 3 month backup on this, I recommend you plan ahead. People Flying or going via ship (including cruises) are affected by this change. |
