Do you need a passport to travel to Canada (by car)?

Travel Info
I am taking my family up to Niagara Falls for a day-trip. I have two sons, 5yrs and 6 mths. Do we need passports, even though we are not flying?

Travel Tips
Yes.

Current Requirements for Entry Into Canada

Visas are not required for U.S. citizens entering Canada from the U.S. You will, however, need:

1. proof of your U.S. citizenship such as your U.S. passport (For information on obtaining a U.S. passport, check with one of the regional passport agencies located throughout the U.S.) or certified copy of your birth certificate issued by the city, county or state in the U.S. where you were born. If you are a naturalized U.S. citizen and do not have a passport, you should travel with your naturalization certificate. A driver鈥檚 license, voter鈥檚 registration card or Social Security card is NOT valid proof of citizenship.
2. photo identification, such as a current, valid driver鈥檚 license.

Due to international concern over child abduction, single parents, grandparents, or guardians traveling with children often need proof of custody or notarized letters from the other parent authorizing travel. (This is in addition to proof of citizenship as explained above.) Any person under the age of 18 and traveling alone should carry a letter from his/her parent or guardian authorizing the trip. Travelers without such documentation may experience delays at the port of entry. Source(s): http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/regi...

i believe they changed the laws, i think you do need it
you'll need one to return to the USA!!!
My friends and I are planning a trip to Cananda in September and apparently you don't need a passport if you are traveling by car. Right now all you need is a birth certificate and a drivers license. And you must have BOTH. But starting Jan 08 you'll need a passport. And if you fly, you have to have a passport.
Yes you do.
Far as I know the US Government overstepped a bit there. They stated that one only needs a Copy of Application, well the Canadians do not think that a printout from any PC of a website is a valid Passport.
I agree with that.
They may have reached an agreement, but it was pretty lame of US to tell Canada what is Legal and what is Accepted as Legal for US Citizens after busting a Canadian and sending him to be 'questioned' for an indefinite time.
But for a visit or day trip the VWP is still in effect with many countries.
But not Canada,,I dunno,,ask a Canadian Consulate.

NO,NO,NO!!! you do Not nedd passports to travel to and from Canada by LAND until January 2008. For now, you only need to hae passports if you are FLYING to and from Canada. You can read the regulation for yourself on the website below. This is a direct quote from the state dept. regulations..and states the need for passports with AIR travel only to and from Canada and the United States at this time. Niagra Falls is fantastic...hope you hae a great time...the Canadian side is wonderful.
