Can I get in and out of canada with out a passport? |
Travel Info my friend and I want to drive into canada for for a few days but we want to make sure we don't need a passport I have one but my friend doesn't. I have read that we shouldn't need a passport to do this is this true? what should he bring to leave and get back in? Travel Tips if you get smuggled in Others If you are driving it will be fine, but have him bring some form of proof that he is an American citizen. His birth certificate would be a good choice. Yep you need a passport anytime you go into another country. However you only need one. Not one for each country, that would be expensive. "CANADA 鈥?Passport or proof of U.S. citizenship such as a birth certificate, naturalization certificate, and photo ID required. Minors (under 16) traveling alone or in someone else鈥檚 custody must present written authorization, signed before a notary, from the parent(s) or guardian." http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/broc... http://gocanada.about.com/od/canadatrave... recently, due to the backlog of applications, the Dept of Homeland Security decided to postpone the requirement for passports to travel to and from Canada. This summer you'll be safe with just a driver's license. Don't bet on getting away with that much longer though. I recently phoned the Canadian consulate, I'm Canadian. They told me I could drive over the border with a Drivers license but when flying I would need a passport for my 4 1/2 yr old son. |
