Seeing the NORTHERN LIGHTS? |
Travel Info We are visiting family in London, Ont. this summer (August). What are the chances of us being able to see the northern lights from there? (I grew up there and I did see them once). I read that there will be more solar wind this year and next, so maybe? Or should we look while visiting Ottawa? Travel Tips http://www.gedds.alaska.edu/auroraforeca... They give the predictions for the Northern Lights. It tells you how strong they will be and where they can best be seen. You can short term or long term predictions, ranging from 1 hr to 28 days. You would have better luck around December when it is darker out for a lot more hours. Source(s): I live in Alaska Other Travel Tips best viewing you have to go about 1000 miles north to places like thunderbay armstrong picklelake redlake and they arnt out every night only in the fall when it gets colder. visit www.googlemaps.com www.yahoomaps.com to find these places. alaska yukon and north west territory are so me of the better places to view I grew up in Northern Manitoba and I now live in NW Ontario....I can tell you that you DO and CAN see northern lights in the summer. (only in the winter or fall is crap) The chances of you seeing northern lights are less if you are in the areas you mentioned...lots of city lights and it is harder to see them if they are there. And...the further north the more you seem to see them. The weather will also dictate if you see them or not....clouds will prevent that obviously. I'd look in both areas. I don't think anyone can give you "odds" because the weather changes week to week by forecast. If the lights aren't there, grab an astronomy book and look at the stars and depending on when in August, looks for meteor shows. my own experiences lol.. sry. umm sorry to burst your bubble but its impossible to c them from ontario. you have to be up north like in the yukon, alaska ect. and it needs to be a certain season Wow Amy what a fantastic site - thanks! Real Me, the light pollution over the cities has made sightings there now near to impossible. You may have better luck farther north (Ottawa area) but you'll have to be well beyond any city lights... perhaps take a drive up to Gatineau Park on a clear night... Have fun, and good luck on the sighting! |
