Each have their own set of guidelines! If already on Income assistant ask your social worker. There has been a lot of changes. As a guideline, most jurisdictions, the last month's, which is the deposit, is paid as a loan, and is deducted a few dollars a month from the benefits cheque. If you are moving from outside of Canada you generally cannot go straight onto welfare unless you are a refugee. I am on ODSP and depending on the jurisdiction your moving to , if you have a pending claim with ODSP they will assist you, but I got dinged as my claim was approved in November, but I did not get my first cheque until December, they pay one month behind. And because OW paid my December benefits I lost some in January, it is best to check with the local OW office, get into see a worker, you can also get a startup grant of $250 for household needs, the first and last is as the last respondant stated, but be aware, ODSP maximum shelter allowance is currently $435 for a single person, I am not sure of the amount for persons with dependants I old and single. As of March 1, 2007 Canada has ceased paying social assistance to anyone except senior citizens. You can't even apply for it any longer. That's why they now have so many people living on the streets. A Canadian can't even get help so I am sure someone coming into our country from another country won't be able to get social assistance either. The money is all gone. Immigrants ate it all up. Sorry. |
