Can i use my debit/chip & Pin in Canada? |
Travel Info If so, when at the checkout do i say it is a debit or credit card, and will i have to change my pin number? Thanks Travel Tips I have a visa debit card also. It does not work as a debit card in retail establishments in Canada, but can be used as if it were a credit card. I have to sign for stuff when I use it, and cannot use a pin. I do use the card at ATMs also in Canada. I have found that I cannot use it in small ATMS, like in convenience stores and hotel lobbies, and, alas, Pearson Airport, but can use it at most of the Banks in Canada (including RBC, CIBC, TD, BMO and some credit unions) with no problem. I have used my bank card in several counrties. It should be fine in Canada, just like in the US / UK, etc. If your card has a visa symbol or interac symbol on back, then all you have to do is use credit and sign for it. You can do this anywhere in the world. I dont really understand your question fully... If you have a visa debit card like i do, then you can use your pin in Australia, as well as credit. You cant use your pin overseas when purchasing, however, if you want to withdraw money from an ATM overseas, you need to select credit, upon which you will then be asked for you pin. Travelled heaps, Canadian residing in Oz. I work in a couple restaurants and I have started to see these Debit/Chip cards usually from people from the UK. At one of the places I work at there is a brand new machine that accepts this technology and will allow you to use your card like a Debit card and will require a PIN number to use it. These new terminals will not let you use your card unless you have the PIN and from my understanding it is the same PIN you had before. At the other place I work we still have an old machine and they allow you to use the card without the PIN and appears just like a credit card would requiring just a signature. |
