From the Cayman Islands but Cannot leave canada? |
Travel Info My boyfriend is from the cayman islands and i live in canada. He was suppose to land here tommorow but can not because of passport complications. He said he has an express passport (dont know what that is) / british passport that he just "fixed" but the officials called him back and told him that he can leave the camyan islands to canada but cannot leave canada! but he has a british passport. How can this be? hes only staying for 2 weeks! is he lying? what are the requirements or the information proving this? i dont get it! Travel Tips An "express passport" is one issued in the European Union by such countries as Germany, France, and the UK. It is basically a reference to the application process (i.e. the documents are electronic, data is sent like an email to the central processing office, and a completed passport is available in around three working days ... compared to the more normal 11-14 days). What I suspect is that his passport is about to expire, if it hasn't already. He cannot renew a British passport in the Cayman Islands, and he (probably) cannot renew it in Canada, either. Certainly not one that has the embedded code information that appears in a modern US or Canadian document - and those are necessary for crossing the border, now. Older passports (without the bar code and other gimmicks) are being accepted - but not renewed. I suspect the limit on those being accepted will be about another 16 months at best ... the 'gimmicked' ones have been available for more than ten years. If he's in Canada, he can ONLY stay if he has a valid passport (and the validity must extend 6 months or so BEYOND his late day in Canada). Otherwise, he's violating the terms of his visa and may end up jailed and/or deported. From the story he's giving you, I'd be looking for another boyfriend. Especially if you haven't seen him for five months or more, and he's only planning on being around for two weeks. There's better out there! Others Because of 9/11, the U.S. and Canada have been trying to change and strengthen the passport laws. The changes were supposed to take place this spring but no one was prepared to handle the changes. As a result, thousands and thousands of people have not been allowed to take vacations, business trips, etc. A ton of people in America have been left with already paid for vacations and/or airline tickets, that weren't able to be used and are now most likely, non-refundable. Bad bureaucratic red tape everywhere, screwing up the system Here's a story I found on line for you- There's a phone number in the story that you can call: Passport Problems Sink Cancun Trip Woman Can't Get Passport In Time To Travel POSTED: 11:56 am CDT March 14, 2007 UPDATED: 1:15 pm CDT March 14, 2007 OMAHA, Neb. -- Two friends have forfeited a $3,000 trip because of passport problems. On Tuesday, ConsumerWatch reported that Christine Beha and her friend were packed and ready to board a flight to Cancun. But Beha was still waiting for her passport to arrive. She said that when she applied in mid-February she was told that an expedited service would take five to seven days. Now the wait time is at least four weeks. Beha's passport did not arrive in time, so she isn't taking the trip. Anyone having problems getting a passport can call 877-487-2778. The National Passport Center is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you do get through on the phone line, the State Department said it can use overnight courier services to get you a passport at the last minute. |
