Travel Tips
Best place to look is www.cic.gc.ca
Its the Citizenship & Immigration government website for Canada. That will give a lot of info.
You are allowed to stay for up to 6 months in Canada with no visa, providing you can prove you have enough money to support yourself for the total duration of your stay (and they may want to know where you'll be staying). Immigration on entry to Canada may not let you stay that long if they doubt you won't be able fund your trip.
With regard to working, you have to apply to the Canadian High Commission in London for a working visa (or student visa if you are a student) They will charge for this and it will be anything from 1yr to a couple of years, with restrictions as where you can work I think.
If you want to stay longer or permanently, you have to apply to Canadian High Commission for Permanent Residency...where there is currently up to a 5 year waiting list to be processed! Good luck with your travels :)

Check with the Canadian Embassy. They'll give you all the info you need. Yes, you need a visa.
you can stay here for no more than six months, after that you have to apply for an extension. for British citizens, you don't need a visa to travel here but if you intend to work you have to apply for a work permit and you can only do that outside Canada.
When I was a chef and worked in Alberta Canada, I had a young lady from Bristol working with me, she and her Canadian girlfriend would go back and forth.

You will need to get a guest work permit, like in England it entitles you to work for a specific amount of time, they generally worked until one or the others time expire and went back either to the UK or came back to Canada.

Permanent one's are available, and if your a skilled labourer, like a doctor, nurse, lawyer or certified trademan it is easier, check with the Canadian Embassy in London or the major city your near for the documents and required information.

I always wanted when I was a chef to work in Europe or England, but did not know how my Canadian chefs papers would translate to the Guild standards in England.
