What are the entry requirements for a U.S. citizen to go to Canada?

Travel Info
My family is going to be in NY this summer and want to go to Canada for a day or two, since I have never been.

Travel Tips
If crossing by land make sure everybody has birth certificates, drivers licenses or other government issued I.D.

If you plan on crossing by air, you will need passports.

Others
Land and sea travelers are encouraged to have a valid U.S. passport. If they do not have a passport, they should be prepared to provide a government-issued photo ID (e.g. Driver's License) and proof of U.S. citizenship such as a U.S. birth or naturalization certificate.

You will also need to have applied for a Passport in order to return to the US. See the link below.
