Is it difficult to get a work visa in Canada? I'm from the USA.? |
Travel Info Is it difficult to find a job if you don't know French? Do I have to find a job first, or get a work visa first? Travel Tips What I'm giving is really solid and good advice as I've lived and suffered thru it. If you already have a job offer in Canada before coming here, it will make things a WHOLE lot easier. I cannot stress that enough. If someone's going to keep you, then you needn't worry, but if you're looking for a job in any province except Alberta, its going to be bloody difficult especially if you're not a blue-collared worker. Its easy to find a job if you're a technician, nurse, welder etc and such, but if you're in Finance, Communications, Marketing, law and other soft-skills type industry, you're in for some very competitive and intense job hunts. I'm in Comm and PR and searched intensively for a job for the 10mths out of the 11mths I was here. Workopolis and other job boards are no help, recruiters are not much help either unless you're after a sales position. I finally got an interview thru networking, networking and networking. And I can tell you, building a social network out of nothing is damn difficult especially when one is living in Hamilton and looking for a job in Toronto. I went to various job workshops and met various employment counsellors, and even though my native language is English and I have an American degree with American and Asian work experience, I'm told that my experience is irrelevant because I've no Canadian experience. I've met other immigrants with PERFECT English and who are professionally extremely well-educated and they have trouble, sometimes years finding a job. One person I know has an MBA in Finance from Purdue University and he's been searching for a job for 11mths. Another I know was a diplomat for the United Nations before for his country, and he's been searching for 3 years since he came to Canada. A British couple in the news, husband a CPA and wife a teacher of many years, came over to Canada lured by the promise of better jobs, good lifestyle by the Government of Canada, and after 6mths, he's only shoveling snow and no one wants to hire his wife, the teacher because her British experience is not relevant to Canada. I have a friend who migrated her with her family. She's a well known engineer in her own country, but when she came here, she couldn't find a job and had to take 3 years of extra engineering classes in a local college and then found a job thru their co-op program. There are numerous true life stories.... unless you're willing to bite the bullet and really WORK hard to find a job, it will be extremely difficult to find one here. If you're not planning to live in Montreal, Ottawa or Quebec, you don't need to know French. I live in Ontario and hardly anyone I know speaks fluent French. Its better if you get a job offer first, then its so much more expedient to getting your work permit. My spouse and I are here because he accepted a Canadian job offer and we relocated here. Because he has a work permit from THAT company, I'm able to apply for an open work permit that allows me to work for any employer. Others www.cic.gc.ca/english/ You will find most of your answers at the above web site. It will also depend on your status such as temporary resident contract worker, immigrant to Canada. Go to their FAQ site. It has a wealth of information. Some jobs require a Visa, a declaration from the employer that no qualified Canadian has been found for the job. Other jobs do not require it. Only Government of Canada employees at Cititzenship and Immigration can give you solid and relieable answers. French is only a necessary requirement for the Province of Quebec or if you apply for a job where bilingualism is part of the stated qualifications. Again here is the link.: www.cic.gc.ca/english my own experience. We welcome most americans. You will be fine, and not all jobs require french. Give it a shot. I think you will like Canada Find a job first and then you can get a work visa. |
