Going to Canada by air returning by bus?

Travel Info
I'm traveling to montreal do I need a passort to enter canada by air from the us (Philadephia) I'm returning to the us by a greyhound bus.

Travel Tips
I assume that you're a U.S. citizen. At the current time, all you need to get into Canada by any means of transportation is valid government ID (not necessarily a passport). If you don't have a passport though I would recommend taking a birth certificate and a driver's license as your valid government ID.

BUT .... Homeland Security now requires any traveler (including U.S. citizens) flying into the U.S. to have a passport. Because you are not flying back into the U.S. though, but rather taking a bus, this will not apply to you.

HOWEVER ... you should take note that as of January 1st, 2008 ALL travelers (by any and all means, including trains, planes, buses and cars) coming into the U.S. (including U.S. citizens) WILL require a passport.

Enjoy your trip to Canada - it's a great place! Source(s): Canadian by birth and U.S. resident currently living in the U.S. - crossed the Canada/U.S. border MANY times and keep up on ALL news that affects border crossings.

Other Travel Tips
Currently, you may enter Canada for a short time with just a birth certificate or driver's license. You can return to the U.S. by car/bus with the same thing - no passport needed for land re-entry until January 2008.
NO, you wont be able to leave. The homeland security requires it's own citizens flying over the border to carry a passport. NO AIRLINE will let you board their aircraft on international flights without a passport. They aren't allowed to let you on.

As of January 23, 2007, a new American law, the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI), requires anyone, including U.S. citizens and permanent residents, leaving the country or returning to the United States by air to have a passport
Jaun is correct, the other answers are not.

You will need a valid passport in order to leave the U.S. on the flight into Canada. All air travelers entering or leaving the U.S. need a valid passport. Travelers by land and sea do not, if they are citizens of North America ... but only for another 10 months or so.
