Are people's tastes/interests similar/different in Vancouver and Montreal?

Travel Info
Are people more laid-back/friendly in one city? What recreational activities do people lean towards in each city?

Travel Tips
Yes, there are some differences between people who live in Vancouver and Montreal. I was born and raised in Vancouver so I can tell you what we are passionate about and known for:

Coffee - regular and lattes - thanks to Seattle we are in love with a few chains of coffee shops. It's practicaly a culture.
Asian restaurants are big here - especially sushi. It's not uncommon to meet friends for sushi for dinner, then go for a latte afterwards and chat for hours. Some of our large chain bookstores and retail food chains have coffee shops in them.

Dogs - almost everybody has a lab, golden retriever, or a pug - and it doesn't matter if you happen to live in a tiny condo in Yaletown (a trendy neighbourhood in downtown Vancouver). And, you must go jogging daily with your dog along the Stanley Park Seawall or False Creek. There are also many "doggy daycares" to choose from for your pet during the day while you are at work.

We are very health conscious here - since it rarely snows you can jog, hike, bike, golf, etc all year round. There is one popular place called the Grouse Grind (a hiking trail) on Grouse Mountain in North Vancouver that one must do at least once in their lifetime. If not just to say "I did that!" Everybody knows and has shopped at Mountain Equipment Coop. And, everybody has at least one fleece vest or jacket in their closet.

Organic foods (ethically grown and harvested of course) have become quite popular here, as well as alternative medicines.

Umbrellas - by far the number one item left behind on buses, restaurants, workplaces, etc. Since we are known for our rain, umbrellas are a common sight here.

Irish pubs are big here - if you meet some friends at a local pub tonight in Vancouver chances are it is an Irish themed pub. Guiness is making quite a come back.

Since we live by the sea, many friends and co-workers own a boat (or have been on one), frequent the beaches, visit the Gulf Islands, watch beach volleyball, swim in the ocean, etc. And, seafood is very popular on our restaurant menus.

I think due to our mild climate and our fondness for coffee, we are more laid back than Montrealers. But not necessarily more friendly.

Anybody from Montreal? What do you think?

Cheers,

Petra M, Vancouver
