Weather in Puerto Rico for August? |
Travel Info I booked my tickets to Puerto Rico for 8/24-8/28 and then fly to St Croix from 8/28-9/4. How is the weather like in San Juan Puerto Rico and St Croix during this period? We want to enjoy the beach and outdoor activities - but did not realize that the month of August is Hurricane season. Should we be concerned and will we be able to enjoy any sunshine at the beaches - we especially look forward to snorkeling, hiking and sightseeing. Travel Tips I lived in PR for 18 years. August is terrific beach weather-you will definetely get a lot of sun, and you will WANT to be in the water-it's the hottest, muggiest month of the year on the island, though September is a close second. Actual temperatures are usually in the high 80's-low 90's, but the humidity can make it feel like the low 100's. One good thing, though: the ocean remains wonderfully cool even when it is hot outside. Take lots of sunblock! :) August is hurricane season, and when hurricanes were looming in the Caribbean, they usually started acting up around late August-yeah, bad timing. HOWEVER, during my 18 years on the island, actual hurricane hits almost always occurred during September (this always sucked for my brother, who's birthday is Sept. 15!), and even then, we only had 4 true hurricanes (the strongest was a category 2, so it could have been worse)-there were maybe 4 or 5 tropical storm hits, maybe 2 of those in the same season, from late August to early October. There was one single storm in November the year before I moved (2 years ago)-very unusual for the island. (And of course, after I moved, nothing has touched the island! *lol*) There were a lot of false warnings, too, during my time there, where the storm would veer away at the last minute and we would get a little rain. Sometimes not even that. All this throughout 18 years. Florida was hit a lot more and a lot harder than Puerto Rico. If a hurricane were to hit the island, it would more likely be as a tropical storm. You would get sun until the very last minute, then the storm for maybe 24 hours, and a day or two of rain. When the storms start moving in early August, watch the track of the storms-if they are steering way north or south of the island, keep your reservation as is. If everything seems to be heading that way, however, I would consider changing the dates of the reservation. While we didn't get hit every year, hurricanes are finicky things and seemed to have a knack for trying to spoil plans. IF you can change your reservation, now, though, I would consider July. July is BEAUTIFUL in PR-still hot, but not quite as muggy. And though it is officially hurricane season, as I mentioned before, most hits were usually in late August-early October, with the majority in September. I won't say anything else, as I don't want to jinx you. ^_~ But really, if you can change the dates, I would go with July. If you have to stick with August, just watch the way storms develop when they start coming. I've heard opposing news this year regarding hurricanes-some say it's going to be a very quiet year in the Atlantic basin, others say it's going to be normal-busy. So we'll see. Hope this helps! Enjoy your vacation! PR is beautiful to visit!!! Don't miss El Yunque (the rainforest)! It was one of my favorite places -great hike, and you can swim in the springs. ^_^ Source(s): Lived in Puerto Rico for 18 years. Other Travel Tips The last time I was in Puerto Rico, August 2005, it was SO hot. It rained one day for about an hour, and it was still very warm. I've never been to St. Croix. However, we did visit some other islands while there and it was unbelievable hot. You should be able to enjoy the beach just fine. Enjoy! you make it sound like they get a hurricane everyday! The weather is hot and humid in August. The beach is the best place to be to get relief. although it is hurricane season I wouldn't worry too much about it because there nothign you can do about it in April. No problem lot of sun sea and... Gilbert very warm nice but warm, never heard if a hurricane hit there yet. Should be very nice in upper 80s. Check www.weathermatrix.net/ =) |
