Belize....? |
Travel Info anyone been? i have read that there are no atm's and to bring lots of cash...this seems unsafe, and a little crazy to me. Travel Tips You are right - it is crazy to be carrying lots of cash and unnecessary! My wife and I moved to Belize about two years ago and have used ATMs to access our account in the States many times. Also, when necessary, I have gone to banks in Belize and gotten $1000+ USD cash advances from my credit card. However to do that you need to contact your credit card company before hand and let them know that you will be in Belize and may be requesting money up to a certain cash limit. This is all to say come to Belize, have a great time, and only bring a moderate amount of cash! Others You don't say where in Belize you are studying about going but I was in Caye Caulker a couple of years ago and there were no ATMs on the island that I knew of. Places like Belize City or San Pedro could be different. People might say to bring lots of cash in reference to the fact that Belize is rather expensive (although worth it IMO). You're right, it is unsafe to carry lots of cash openly. Use a concealed money belt and try to get accomodations that have a safe. Take a credit card as a backup but try not to use it because there will almost certainly be big surcharges. I'm not trying to scare you though; we had a great time, no problems of any kind. Take care & have a great time. BTW if you happen to go to the Cayes, if possible go snorkeling at the Hol Chan underwater park. Awesome! Depending where you are staying, looks like plenty of ATM's and banks on this site. I suggest you check with your bank to see if your ATM is good in this country and where.
