Is it possible to backpack across the carribean islands? |
Travel Info Is it possible to backpack across the carribean islands? Travel Tips I'm sure it's possible if you can spontaneously hitch rides on ferries, boats to get to your next island. After all, they are islands... and unless you're a tremendous swimmer, not afraid of sharks and other scary sea creatures... you get my drift. (no pun intended). The whole 'backpack across Europe' thing usually means staying in hostels, taking EuroRail for which you get a long term pass, and eating very cheaply as you go. I don't know if there are 'hostels' in the Caribbean... I just know that there are resorts. Others Sure and If You like camping even better... Hi!, Backpack across the Dominican is possible, but they don麓t have any camping places (for so far I know..) but you can easily find to sleep in cheap hotels or by private people http://www.fodors.com/miniguides/mgresul... try this link I'm from and living in one of the Caribbean islands - Trinidad. It's important to remember that the islands are separate sovereign states. In order to travel to different island countries you have to go through customs each time. Some of the countries are multi-island states. For example, Trinidad & Tobago is one country, but is made up of 2 separate islands (Trinidad is one, Tobago is the other). Travel between these two islands is, therefore, quite easy. The same goes for other multi-island states - Antigua & Barbuda, the Bahamas, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, etc. - as you can see, in many cases the name of the country is a good guide. However, if you wanted to travel from, say, Jamaica to Antigua to Barbados to Tobago (all very popular destinations), you would have to go through customs each time you entered a new country. If you don't mind that, then, sure! Backpack away!! Like a previous person said, you can find cheap accommodation, cheap travel around each island, and cheap places to eat. Check the Internet for the cheapest flights between islands. Then come on down! Don't forget to add Trinidad & Tobago to your travel plans! Best wishes. There is no way that you can take a boat from one island to the other unless is a very big boat or a cruise, Why? Check the newspapers from Puerto rico, like EL VOCERO or EL NUEVO DIA, check the statistics on how many people has DIED drawn in those waters trying to get from Dominican Republic, Cuba, and Jamaica to Puerto Rico. You really owed to be careful backpacking take into consideration that the temperature could be 90 degrees but when you are walking in the rain forest heat strokes could leave you unconsitious , drink plenty of water, and do not over dressed. Remember a hat. Also be careful with where you go, you could end up inside someones property and they don't take it very well. Trust me running away from someone with a machete Is not fun when you are tired, and out of breath from hiking. ASK if you can give you some of the fresh fruit don't just take it without permission. Don't assume no one is looking. A good place for backpacking is EL YUNQUE in Puerto Rico. Contrary to what another answerer has said, there are islands in the Caribbean connected by boat: St Lucia, Guadeloupe, Dominica and Martinique. http://www.express-des-iles.com/... . I think that it would be dangerous to backpack in most parts of the Caribbean, which simply isn't equipped for that style of travel, especially if you had it in mind to hitch hike. Just decide where you'd like to go, find suitable accommodation at the various hubs of your choice and take advantage of a flight pass to move from island to island. http://www.caribbeanaviation.com/passes.... |
