Have you ever been to Belize, Central America? What was your favorite thing that you did? Why did you go? |
Travel Info Have you ever been to Belize, Central America? What was your favorite thing that you did? Why did you go? Travel Tips I was born in Belize. My family moved to Canada when I was still pretty young but I've been back a couple of times. The first time was when I met my boyfriend and we now have a baby boy and live in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I could write a LOT about Belize, and what I don't know, my boyfriend would definitely know. He lived there for about 22 years before moving to Canada and knows a lot about the culture and popular tourist sights. I'll try to cover the basics: I haven't actually been out to the Cays, but I've heard a lot about how beautiful they are. San Pedro on Amergris Cay is supposed to be a pretty good party place. Punta Gorda in the south of Belize has some new resorts, and from what I hear, they're pretty good ones. I wouldn't go by land tho, I've heard the road is pretty bad there. Plane or boat would be best in that case, but if you would enjoy a vacation in a secluded area, Punta Gorda would be a good place. There are lots of jungle trecks and such from there, beause it's so deep in the jungle. Belize City is ok to go visit for a few hours, but I wouldn't stay there. There are some good restaurants (and you'll find rice and beans on pretty well every menu), but almost half of the country's 280,000 population lives in Belize City, so there's a lot more crime there. Not that bad for violent crime, but watch your things at all times. Belizeans may be some of the nicest people in the world but there are a lot of people there who will steal anything that's not tied down. Belmopan and San Ignacio are close to where I used to live and where everyone I know lives. I know more about that area. If you like Maya ruins, Altun Ha is a good place, and not too far from Belize City. Xunantunich is also good and I know it better because it's close to San Ignacio. Five Sisters Falls is also near there, and it is so pretty. I've also been to Rio Frio Cave, and that was pretty cool too, with the river going through it. If you're planning to go to Belize tho, one thing you need to know is to bring lots of $ for touring expenses or buying any kind of merchandise, especially if the item is not priced. If you look like a tourist, they will charge you at least twice what they would charge a local person. When I went to Xunantunich, I was charged $5 Belizean (which is $2.50 US). A tourist would have been charged at least $20/person. Just to give you an idea as to what kind of prices you'll be looking at. Also, American money is more desired there than Belizean, so don't bother getting the foreign currency before going. And what you probably wouldn't find out if I don't tell you - upon leaving Belize (at the airport or border, whichever way you're traveling) you have to pay a departure fee. The last time I left Belize it was $30 US - and it has to be American CASH. No credit card or anything. They have a Bank of Belize outlet in the airport where you can exchange money if you don't have any US cash, but they charge you a crapload for it too. And what that guy said about trying Belikin beer "depending on your age" - he's right, it's a great beer and it's local (the brewery is pretty much right next to the airport - you can see it from the runway), but there is no age limit for alcohol and tobacco in Belize. Some places will even sell it to kids, but most will at least sell either one to anyone who looks like they've hit puberty. If you want to know anything more or want to see my pictures of Belize, just email me and I'll gladly send them to you and give you any info I can. PS - one more thing about Belizeans. As a tourist, you might be interested to know that the only complaint I've heard from locals about tourists is when they stick their noses up at them as if they're superior. I've seen tourists like that there myself and I'm sure that would tick anybody off. Others No not yet, but if you have been there and it is good you write me jesusjetteyahoo.dk and i will go there. why dont you visit EU and denmark www.copenhagen.dk www.tivoli.dk Hans Christian Andersen is born here. do you know him? jette copenhagen denmark Eat at the Wet Lizard. It's an open air restaurant that overlooks the ocean. Depending on your age, definitely try Belikin beer. It's made in Belize. There's lots of shopping. Diamonds and gold are a lot cheaper than in the states. There are organized site seeing excursions that are great. Be prepared for hot weather! I was there a month ago and it was at least 95 degrees. Yes - our family moved from the States about 18 months ago. The most interesting thing done so far were several cave tours - especially one that went very far into a cave on boat. The thing that I am still looking forward to doing is going to shark and ray alley off of Ambergris Caye. Everyone seems to think it is a great experience. We came here because we are members of the Baha'i Faith and wanted to help the community here. However, whatever the reason you come here, you are likely to have a great time. It is a fasinating country! Belize is a beautiful place. I have never been there, but I have read a lot about it. Checkout this website http://snipurl.com/1kogx. It has great articles and links to Belize that I believe will be of use and interest to you. Enjoy and have a blast when you go there. |
