I am taking a cruise the first of september, in the middle of hurricane season...? |
Travel Info I want to know if anyone has been on a cruise during a hurricane or does the cruise lines avoid the bad weather? I am getting worried. Travel Tips I have not taken a cruise in the hurricane season, but having lived on a Caribbean island which welcomed a great many cruise ships, including Carnival, I can assure you that when the weather conditions were bad, even short of hurricane conditions, the ships stayed away. There are emergency plans for changing course, or simply for staying put where they are and giving the badly affected areas a miss. The consequences of deliberately sailing towards a hurricane are so serious that they simply wouldn't risk it. Relax and enjoy your cruise! Others We went on a cruise in September 2005 after hurricane Katrina. Hurricane Rita blew in while we were on our cruise. Due to the hurricane we got to spend 2 days in Jamaica, instead of just one. Our 7 day cruise turned into a 10 day cruise because the ship could not get back into port until the channels were dredged. We never saw any bad weather from hurricane Rita. The Captain kept the ship out of harm's way. The Cruise lines will go anyway. Don't you remember the hot water that Carnival Cruise lines go into a couple of years ago for the damage done to the boat because they left Port right into the face of a Hurricaine.? Due to present day technology, we can see satellite photos of hurricanes and we know exactly where they are at any given time and we also have a relatively good idea where they are headed. As recently as the early 1900's, people had absolutely no idea if and where hurricanes existed until it was blowing your house to bits. Since we know their position, it is inconceivable that a company would risk sailing into a hurricane. It won't turn out like the Spanish Armada, which was decimated by a hurricane that might well have influenced the history of North America. In addition, it's possible that the prices are cheaper during that part of the year. They will just stay in another spot for a long time untill the hurricane is gone or away from where the cruise is traveling. Dont worry about it! |
