Travel Tips
Mullet Bay beach is about a ten minute walk from the Maho area. Mullet may be my favorite beach on the island; beach shacks for food/drink, usually fairly calm surf, clean, etc.
As mentioned by previous poster, Maho beach is neat because of the proximity to the runway, but hold on to your belongings or stay off to the side.
I would also recommend renting a car to explore other beaches such as Long, Cupecoy, Orient, Pinel, etc. There are more beautiful beaches on that island than any other island I have ever visited throughout the Carib. Great time of year to be going, weather never changes much..84 and sunny!

I have traveled extensively throughout the Carib, and although the traffic can be horrible at bridge opening time, St. Maarten is hands down the best combination of nightlife, dining, shopping, and not even an argument; beaches.

If you go, have fun and say hi to Norbert at Sunset Beach Bar!

Others
I've never been to Maho Beach, Sonesta but I think you can walk to two beaches. One of the beaches (Maho) is directly under the airport runway. Not a very relaxing beach. If you happen to be on the beach when a heavy jet takes off, you will get a mouth full of sand and will lose your towels.

You can also chose to use public transport which is supposedly pretty good.

I found renting a car was quite useful as it allowed me to choose any beach on the island, sometimes visiting 2 or 3 a day.

The best beach is Orient Bay, although if you are looking for something a little quieter and more isolated, there are plenty of those (Happy Bay, Friar's Bay), specifically north of Marigot.
There was also a good one on the south western tip (Plum Bay)of the island which was quite good as well.

If you go to Orient Beach, you might want to get to Pinel Island
which features the smallest National Park in the world. Good snorkelling.

Yes I have stayed there....not fond of the beach in that it is so close to the runways and aircraft winds cause upset...However, it is not far to Mullet Bay...and Simpson

My favorite beaches in St. Martin/Sint Maarten are Orient and Baie Rouge....not to mention I'm a real goner for the Sunset Cafe in Grand Case on the French side - gorgeous sunsets...The Grand Case Beach Club, where the Sunset Cafe is located lost some of its beach/sand area over the past 10 years or so due to hurricanes, but still boasts a lovely beach with crystal clear water and fabulous views of Creole Rock and Anguilla
