Travel Info Countries prepared for hurricane ivan? Travel Tips Hurricane Ivan 2004? Read about it at http://www.cnn.com/2004/weather/09/12/hu... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/america... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/hurricane_i... Others ??? would answer the question if there was one if you're asking if Grenada was prepared for Ivan, well, no. The comments below also reflect the state on my home of ST Thomas before Marilyn hit us in 95: it had been something like 50 years since a major storm had hit there. People took a "it wont happen here attitude" Building codes were lax to start with; enforcement lacking; builders were lazy/incompetent/stupid. so a lot of structures were built that stood fine in normal weather for decades and just plain disappeared in the hurricane ( ST Thomas and Grenada had major damage to over 60% of buildings). Governments were lacking in funds and imagination and preparation so they had little resources to help after the storm; it took 3 months to get electricity back up and running. Now, after having seen what Luis did to Antigua, Marilyn to St Thomas Hugo to St Croix and Ivan to Grenada EVERYONE in the Caribbean is a lot more serious about building and preparing for hurricanes. lived in the Caribbean 30 years; have gone thru David Fredrick Hugo Marilyn Bertha Georges and Lenny on St Thomas |
