Others I have not been to Haiti, but I have been to Dominican Republic many times. I can tell you that Haiti is very dangerous rigt now, and would be best not to travel there for awhile, until the government gets things settled. With the state Haiti is in NOW, i wouldn't recommend you going there until the next couple of years, or when things are fairly back to normal. It is possible to go to Haiti and stay in a resort, protected from the outside world and not experiencing anything of the country itself. Apart from that, the picture is very grim and even foreigners who have been established there for a long time will only venture out with bodyguards for fear of being kidnapped and held to ransom (there has been a lot of that going on recently). It is a country which fascinates and at the same time saddens the visitor. It is beautiful and the people are friendly and smiling, but the poverty is such as I have not witnessed elsewhere and most people who visit go to help on missions. However, there are not many of those at the moment, as it is too dangerous. http://www.sptimes.com/2005/06/23/worlda... Yes, it was fine. You need to be a bit of a seasoned traveller. The diving and snorkeling is nice. I take my boat over there from Manzanillo sometimes for the day and come back to the DR. Yes and I loved it! I went 3 times as a missionary and actually almost moved there. It's a place you love or hate. As soon as you get out of the airport it reeks. The capital city is crowded and there are piles of garbage and traffic is a nightmare. Most places have little or no electricity and no running water. A bathroom at all is a luxury. It can get very dangerous at times, especially for someone white. But - the people are amazing. The pace of life is so laid back. The mountains and ocean are amazing. Theres just something about it that can't be described, but I would go back in a heartbeat. (I actually am planning a trip for sometime this year) |
