Any recommendations on visiting Trier, Germany and its surroundings? |
Travel Info My husband and I are going to Trier in the beginning of July for about 5 days to visit a very good friend of ours. We probably won't be spending all our time with her, since we don't want to be a burden, so for all of you who are in the know, what would you recommend that we see / do over there? I know that Luxembourg is near by so we're planning on spending at least one day there. But any other recommendations will be welcomed! So go ahead and give me the details (about restaurants, sights, bars / cafes, etc.), I will carefully look through all the long answers (and the short ones as well). Travel Tips I was just in Trier two weeks ago. I used it as a base for visiting the Mosel River Valley, which I highly recommend. I did rent a car at Frankfurt Airport. Via Autobahn it took about 2 hours to get to Trier. There is train service, however it will take much longer and you'll have to change trains. Trier has a great pedistrian downtown shopping area. This is the primary place to do all your site seeing and eating. Most Germany guide books will have a few pages on Trier, so you can get a list of all the attractions - My favorites were the city museum (just renovated), and the Liebrrauenkirche Church. There is also an archilogical museum, but it was closed when I was there. I stayed at the Hotel Petrisberg and was very satisfied. It is slighly out of the main center, up on a hill overlooking the town. The views are nice and it's a very quiet area. It family run, and the people are friendly and accommodating. For eating, I liked the Zum Domstein for lunch or dinner. It right on the main square, friendly service, decent food. I recommend you visit the Mosel Valley. The key towns to see are BERNKASTEL and COCHEM. If you have time you may drop on on any of the other small towns along the river. These town have a medieval feel to them, with timber/stucco buildings and old churches. The towns are lovely to walk through, drink wine or a few have old castles to venture into. To travel the Mosel, you can use train, boat or car. There are plenty of boat companies out of Trier that will accomodate you. With a car, there may be a bit of traffic during the summer, as it is a small windy road that serves the area. Hope this helps you get started! |
