Renting a car in Paris and driving to Rome is a long road trip ,probably 2 days, with an overnight along the way. Gas is very expensive in Europe, and you might want to consider taking a eurailpass instead and leave the driving to the train. If you want to stop along the way to Rome on a road trip, use a map and decide where to stop along the way to sightsee, depending on how many days you want to see France and Italy. Try using Trip Advisor on the web, this gives you many sights to see, where to stay, etc. Also if you are an AAA member, you can get a triptik from them and they can plan a road trip for you.
