Malta - where shall I stay and what shall I do?

Travel Info
I am going to Malta at the end of July for a week, but don't know which part to stay in. I don't want anything too touristy or too bar/club orientated. But I want to be near enough to these things in case I want to do them. What about Silema (is that right spelling)? What is that like?

Also, any tips on places to see and things to do?

Travel Tips
st.pauls bay in the santa maria aparthotel
its 3 stars but it has a great pool. plenty of local shops and a harbour nearby.
when i went i went to the meditterano place and swam with dolphins it was amazing i also travelled around the island on the local busses. i went on a excursion to sicilly to see mount etna and do shopping in siccilian shops but it was only for 1 day. (up for 5am and back at 11pm) the blue grooto is great to beautiful place. the market sells lovely souvenirs too. if you dont like clubs stay away from valletta. its a small island so you are never too far away from anything. its a great place. good luck!

Hi there, Sliema is very central, plenty shops, bars and restaurants nearby, not too far from Paceville which has plenty night life, on the Sliema seafront you can book boat trips, there are many excursions available, museums, there is also Splash and Fun which is a water fun park which is great fun to visit, If you do decide to stay in Sliema things can be quite expensive to buy, watch out for rip-offs, but hope you have fun, weather is very hot here just now, remember to cover up with sun block!!!
I'm afraid most of Malta is dedicated to the tourist and so you cannot escape the bars etc. but whatever you do HIRE A CAR with this you can escape to quiet beaches etc as well as explore the island. Buy a guide map and with this visit the many ancient ruins and don't forget the 'cart tracks' at Clappam Junction' (no I'm not joking ) have a good holiday.

By the by - DO NOT stay down the south eastern corner its not too good.
Malta is one of my favourite destinations. I go there primarily for the diving, but it has much more to offer. Visit Mdina in the centre of the Island it`s beautiful. Take the time to drive around & visit the hard to reach places. Malta has been inhabited for a long long time now, so most of the Island is built up, but for me that's part of it's charm. You walk through it's history. You also have to use the buses.. they're great..
Take a long lazy lunch by the Grand Harbour after a walk around Valletta. Personaly though I would stay around St Pauls Bay because it's pretty central, although Slima is fine also.
Enjoy your stay, I always do.

Recommend the Lonely Plant Guide.
Go somewhere else - I would not go back to Malta as the only places worth seeing are Valetta and Gozo
