Has anybody been to Morroco?

If so can you recommend the best place to stay. I want variety. Would like to be near a beach, but also near a town or city that is vibrant and cultured. Also is Morroco expensive to eat etc.

I went to Morocco a year and a half ago, over Christmas. We spent two weeks and got as far south as Agadir, which is a big beach resort town. I think the beach was OK there (we spent more time in the mountains and then the day we had marked for the beach, it rained all day. What rotten luck!) but the city is definitely not vibrant or cultured.

I think the farther south you go the more "African" Morocco seems--and that was the coolest part of our trip. People also seemed friendlier and more open farther south. We visited a really cool town in the mountains east of Agadir called Tafraoute. We were only there one day but I wish we could have found it earlier in our trip to spend more time. We found transport in Morocco to be very confusing and frustrating. The buses didn't leave on time or go where they said they would go, and often broke down. My advice would be to fly down south to Agadir, and then hop along the coast farther south, taking quick trips up to the mountains to get some variety.

As far as price goes, there seemed to be a pretty good range from cheap to expensive restaurants. We used the Lonely Planet Morocco guide and had a pretty cheap holiday.

Marrakech is a great place to stay, although far from the beach. It is a fascinating town, try to stay in a Riad ( Traditional house) inside the Medina ( the old city walls). Food there is cheap, and good, although it seems to lack variety.

Marrakech certainly fits the 'vibrant and cultured' requirement. From snake charmers in the big square and an entrancing souk to Tracy Emin in one of the galleries.

We spent a few nights in a Riad in the Medina, and then stayed out at Caravanserei for a few days relaxation.
