Has anyone been to Qawra in Malta or nearby? |
Travel Info I have just booked a last minute deal to Qawra in Malta and although it looked fantatic i have read some mixed reviews. If you have been there please let me know what you thought of it and some resort info if poss. Also, if anyone can give me a good link for some video reviews of this area i will be extremely greateful as i have been searching for hours!! Id also like to know what i can expect in the way of food and drink prices. Many thanks. Travel Tips I love Malta but have not stayed in Qawra (Pronounced Our ra) but have visited it. It is a fairly typical tourist area and not overpriced - things cost around the same as here. There is no sandy beaches in Qawra but there is rock bathing (check the local press and ensure that the sewage works are not leaking before you swim there - got this info from a Qawra resident). There is a bus terminus where buses go all over the island but when we visited, the last bus left at 9pm. The nearest sandy beaches are either Mellieha Bay or, a bit nearer, Golden Bay which is lovely. If you are hireing a car, try Gjahn Tuffeiha Bay - unspoilt and wonderful but don't swim there in rough weather. We discovered Armier Bay at the very top of the island on our last visit. This was the best of all. Not too many tourists know about it, lovely views over Comino and beutiful turquoise water. A must. As someone else has said, a visit to Mdina is essential. Its a wonderful romantic walled city and contains the best cafe in the world -Fontinellas - try their chocolate cake or Lemon Merangue pie (OK, I know the spelling is wrong) - made by lemons off their own tree. Whilst at Mdina, have a look at Rabat, the old Roman town. Cheap good eating in the evening is the Black Cat Cafe - brilliant bragioli and they do Niddi Friddi - Maltese spagetti fritters - wow! Popeye's village is a bit of a rip off so don't bother about that. Ta Qali, the crafts village near Mdina is worth a look - especially for glass. The glassworks have their own shops which sell their stuff much cheaper than the tourists shops and they have seconds at rediculously low prices. One other thing, if you don't like crowds or live animals being sold, stay away from the Sunday market at Valletta - it is an exhausting experience. You will either love Malta or hate it. Most people love it. There is so much to see and explore and everything is there to have a great holiday - but its not handed to you on a plate. You have to explore and find the real Malta. Qawra is a great base but do explore the rest of the island. Others sorry cany tell you how to get a video but qawra is beautiful and reasonly priced there are one or to maltese people who use this site so hopefully they can be of more help try site called malta memories we have been to malta and love it u will find the people v friendly and helpful, if possible hire a car as u will be able to find a lot of really nice places, try mellieha bay its safe and sandy also quite big, u must go to mdina near rabat ask for fontenellas its the most gorgeous cafe cake shop with fab views, buses are cheap to use, silver jewellery good buy and beautiful, food and drink good dont be afraid to try local dishes especially pastitse [little hot pies] also apple pie which is spiced, could go on and on about malta we go ourselves this wkend-have a happy hol I stopped going to Malta as the hotels went down the pan, so hope they've improved a lot. See the reviews here. Good luck http://www.realholidayreports.com/report... I loved it but went out of season. It will be full of tourists now so if you wanted to get away from Britsh people then you're going to the wrong place. I have friends who live out there and they showed me the real Malta. Be aware of time share touts too. My friends advise visitors to tell them "Go away! I already live here!" otherwise they won't leave you alone, especially at this time of year. Go to The Qawra Palace Hotel or The Topaz around the corner if you want friendly people. it's nice, believe me! till some time ago, when most of the family still did not work, we used to go there to swim every sunday. the beach is rocky so no problem about sand getting in your feet. at bugibba, a little way away, there is a fantastic disco where you can go, called Amazonia, famous for its gigs once in a while. night time is better than day because of the heat. about prices, i guess the others told you enough.... |
