Why do the French hate hearing English? |
Travel Info Whenever you speak English they give you a bad look. You're not French. Why do they expect you to speak their language? Shouldn't they be grateful to us, tourists, for boosting their economy? I found the British people to be extremely polite and friendly. The French waiters and personels aren't really as nice. Travel Tips French see someone who immediately ASSUMES they speak English as impolite and presumptuous. What works is to say something like "Bonjour, est-ce que vous parlez anglais?" (get someone to coach you in pronouncing it nearly correctly). They will then be delighted that you have made the effort, and try to show off their own very poor English. Furthermore, they find an English (or American, they can't tell the difference) accent charming. This is the only French phrase you will need, but it opens all the doors. Just to reverse the tables, I was recently in a department store in New York. A foreign customer was trying to ask something in clear English but with a very strong accent. The store girl made no attempt whatsoever to try to understand what was being asked and was extremely rude. Others Since when do we care what the French think? English makes a sound that is painful to them, and makes it hard for them to pretend their human form. Some Frenchies have been known to shed their human skin and run in terror back to their space ships just from the sound of people speaking English. because they are french The French are arrogant. They've carried that reputation for decades. There has never been any love lost between English speaking people and the French. My best advice, spend your money where you're treated the best. And let the French try another way to scratch up a living. Maybe it will improve their attitudes. English does not sound very nice to Frence people. "Like a machine gun", "Too loud". It also stands out when everyone is speaking French. The problem is that many English speaking people, especially the English and those from the US, talk very loudly. French people do not like this. its probably not that. americans sound very loud and abrasive when we talk and in europe in general people are laid back and reserved. try to talk quieter and slower. i have lived in europe for 3 years now and this is what i always hear. try to be over polite, make a joke, and ask about their country or what a english word is in french. each country seems now , especiallyin france, to keeptheir culture and language and are shying away from english. but they do like it when u try or ask questions. if your on vacation they shouldnt expect you to know it word for word. dont show your frustration....that is a big no no in europe. |
