Are youth hostels a good value for a solo traveller?

Travel Info
If I want to rent a private room in a hostel, wouldn't cost me as much as a hotel room? About 90$? Dorms are cheap, but I'd have to wait in lines to get to the bathroom. What do you suggest?

Travel Tips
Don't be afraid to share a room. You will always meet colorful people that will probably become a positive memory from your trip. Just remember to bring ear plugs. Lots of people snore and get up early or come in late. BRING EAR PLUGS. The bathroom thing varies depending on the hostel. I've never had to wait very long, but once I was staying at 3 ducks in Paris in January and the shower was outside (enclosed of course) - a very eye popping way to wake up.

i just picked my nose.
it depends where you are. im english and have been around the world. dorms can have thier own bathrooms too. a double room in sydney for example approx 50 bucks a night< in Bali around 12 bucks if you shop around
I spent 2 months backpacking thru Europe and used the hostels all the time. They are cheap and a good place to meet other travelers. You can learn a lot from those people you meet
Hostels are good value for solo traveller - but if you want a private room it is sometimes better to check into a pension or a hotel. Hostels have generally very few private single rooms.

Plus if you are backpacking through Europe, you'll soon learn that spending the extra money on the single room is not always worth it.
I mean all you need is a bed to sleep - what does it matter that you have to wait 5 minutes to use the shower? After all, this can happen to you in a cheap hotel too. It is not uncommon for a low-budget hotel in Europe to have shared toilets and showers!
So bite the bullet and share the room too - an save around 300 EUR on a two-week trip in Western Europe.
as a solo traveller you really should share a room where you can meet lots of people. i mean, i've already backpacked several times and never ever had to wait in line or anything like it.
