Travelling Solo?

Isn't it better to travel solo? You could stay somewhere as much as you want, take photographes as much as you want, plan your own itinerary, and have a better chance to hook up with someone on the road or be approached by a handsome stranger :P

I've now taken 11 solo trips to Europe so I've got a little perspective on this. For the reasons you mentioned, the overall freedom of solo travel is great. You will basically go where you want, when you want and do what you wish. As humans are social creatures not having a companion does motivate you to reach out to other travellers or locals, whether it's at a hostel, pub or museum. I know I probably wouldn't have met some of the colorful people I ran into in my travels if I was travelling with someone. But traveling with a friend or loved one definitely presents another experience which can't be had by yourself. A shared adventure is a special thing. The essence of a memory of an event can't be completely conveyed through a picture, story and even video. Also some places are just not very condusive to solo travel. I really felt like something very obvious was missing in Paris. I was blown away by the views from the top of the Eiffel tower at 10:30 PM on a Sunday night but was even more moved by the looks between couples that were exchanged at the top. You just knew they were sharing a moment they would never forget. To this day I will not step foot in Italy without a loved one to take because of the romance factor. I don't think I could visit Italy and not go to Venice and what's a trip to Venice without a gondola ride and what's a serenade on a gondola worth solo? I have no regrets from my solo adventures but I think my time has come to take a fun loved one. Taking a grumpy complainer type is never a good idea but there's something so awesome about a shared experience between two like-minded adventurous people.
