I will be living in Germany for 2-3 years. What do I do for a cell phone? |
Travel Info Is it better/cheaper? to use the same phone & go prepaid by changing the SIM card? Or should I get a German phone? I want my kids to be able to contact me from the US and not have to pay high prices for the calls. Travel Tips If I were you I would cancel your current plan, get a German cell phone for use there and get a service like Vonage or similar to make calls to/from the states, it is far cheaper. Even if you have a US prepaid plan the roaming charges are going to kill you. Others I lived in Czech Republic for a year. We ahd a landline and I used a pay as you go (my child was with me). Just like here, shop around for a good deal. A contract might work best for you. For them to call you, try one of the 1010 numbers. 1010297 rates are 3 cents a min from US to a landline in Germany, and 21 per minute to a cell phone. Text messages on my current payasyou go cingular phone are 5 cents to international mobiles. I would get a landline, for long calls, and a payasyougo for a mobile. then your kids could text you when they want to call you. If you get a mobile (Europeans don't call them cell phones), you will have to be savvy with the shopping around. Just like here, you have to know what to ask to get the best deals. BTW, changing the SIM card might not work if you don't have an unlocked GSM phone. http://www.1010297.com/1010297_intlrates... here's the url for 1010297 if you want to see what it's about. there is no contract or service. You dial 1010297 before you call long distance if you want to use it, and don't if you don't get a cell phone there....and use the landline for calling to the US, its much cheaper...or u can download skype (its free) on the internet, witha webcam and microphone and see and speak to your children for free. i do it and it has saved so much money. |
