When or when not to use traveller's cheques in Europe?

Travel Info
Plan to go to Prague, then Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Hungary.

Travel Tips
If you carry Euro notes you have the right money for Austria, Germany, Italy and Holland.
In the other countries they will accept them in a pinch, but always at a rate that is bad for you.
I would advice you to take about 100 Euro with you in the countries that do not take the Euro, or US Dollars or British pounds if either is your own money, for emergencies.
But get some money out of an ATM as soon as you are in a country, or change you left over money for the next country.
If you have a credit card, take it, best put it in your money belt as extra back-up.

You can use ATM's in Czech republic, and I am sure also in Hungary, and I have used it in all other countries myself.
Just check with your bank to see if your card will work abroad and what they charge. If they charge more than a token-fee, ask around for a free of charge card. Source(s): I have been traveling Europe a lot of times and have never used travellers cheques. Never been out of money either.
Other Travel Tips
I am also traveling this summer and I went to my bank, asked what countries I could use my ATM card. The less paperwork, extra money in your wallet (other than what you feel comfortable taking), the better off you are securing your money. I am making sure I have enough funds in my ATM, thus, I use a small sized credit card (ATM card), nothing else other than for incidentals. In our society today, one has to be savvy in protecting themselves, and personally, this is the only way to go.
I think it's pretty pointless to use travelers checks in Germany. There are places that cash them but I think it's a pain in the butt. I've used my ATM card many times in Germany without a problem. I know you can use your ATM in Austria, Switzerland, Itlay and Holland as well. I'm not sure about Prague and Hungary. Check with your bank about the fees.
