Does anyone have any advice about traveling to europe? Tricks that i should know? |
Travel Info Specifically LATVIA if any of you have been there...MUCH APPRECIATED! Travel Tips 1) Pack lightly - no matter how many times I have read this, and packed lightly (according to me), I always find I packed too much. On every trip I've lugged around stuff I never wore, sometimes paid excess baggage fees, and even sent items home by express mail to save weight! It cannot be stressed enough to pack lightly. 2) Make a copy of your passport and keep it in your luggage in case you lose yours. 3) Wear a money belt or one around your neck - pickpocketing will be your biggest risk. 4) Because luggage is often lost: --Make sure to take all medications with you on the flight. --Pack a change of underwear, socks and a light shirt in your take-on luggage. --Do not pack anything of great value in the luggage (jewelry, electronics, cash or traveler's checks). 5) If your flight is a long one (like from America), avoid caffeine and alcohol, drink plenty of other fluids to keep hydrated. 6) If your prepaid expenses will be high (over $2000), try to buy trip insurance. I get mine from AAA and it's not very expensive (about $100). It will cover your prepaid costs if you have to cancel your trip or interrupt it. It will also cover expenses in some cases of missed connections, and of course, if your luggage is lost. On one trip to Europe, we had trouble with our flights (for a reason covered in the "terms and conditions") and had to reroute - the insurance reimbursed us for the $1500 we had to spend in Europe to change our flights. 7) Buy a calling card for domestic calls as well as calls home. You'd be surprised how inexpensive they are and how handy! 8) If you can, buy a book from Rick Steves' Europe through the Back Door. I've been to Europe many times and would never travel without consulting them. I don't know if he has one for Latvia, but the general information about Europe is wonderful. At least you can read all the info on his website. The link called "Grafffiti Wall" has tons of helpful info: http://www.ricksteves.com/ Source(s): Sorry I don't know anything about Latvia. Other Travel Tips europe hmm....make sure you have a map with you of the city your in...learn a few emergency words in the languages of the country your in, such as money exchange, tour, and bathroom. have fun! Mimii is so dead on with her answer. She should get the ten points. Pack your bag, and then take out about half of it. Seriously. Also, figure out in your head what you think the trip is going to cost...and then double it. Have a mix of traveller's cheques, cash, and plastic available to you. Latvia is a nice country, but once you get outside of the major tourist areas you'll find that few people speak English. How's your Russian? Riga is a big city and there is a lot to do and see. Jurmala is also great. You can get a train from Riga. Then hit the western coast. When you're in Riga, say hello to the cat at the bus station. She's everyones sweetheart, and I'm not kidding. One last thing: Carry a nail clipper with you. I always feel like an idiot recommending this, but you have no idea how many times that little sucker has come in handy for me. Lived in Estonia for two years and had a gf in Latvia. |
