French question? |
Travel Info 1. What different francophone countries or regions celebrate Carnaval? 2. Which cities or regions in France celebrate Carnaval? The carnaval i am talking about is a special holiday for europe. Only say french speaking countries. Travel Tips I think the biggest francophone Carnaval takes place in Quebec, Canada every winter (end of January, beginning of February - before Lent. It is billed more as a secular event than a religious one - not an official holiday either). I'm not familiar with any French Carnavals but I did come across something called Carnaval de Paris (a.k.a. Saint-Fargeau)which is organized by the "Fumantes de Pantruche" - Apparently it goes back to the 18th century where something called the "cortege du Boeuf Gras" (rough translation: parade of the Fat Bull) first took place. It was outlawed, then reinstated, then was silenced again in the 20th C. (actually for a 50 year period) before returning in 1998...in any case it is an annual tradition that also seems to precede Lent. I found detailed information on the event but it's all in French and unfortunately I don't have the time to translate it for you...but if you do know some French, check out the link below. It appears very much geared to the local population as there is no information in any other language but French. Well, I had no idea this festival existed so...YAY! I learned something new...Thanks. Maybe a French/Francophone native can provide more information on this subject. Source(s): French Carnaval http://www.carnaval-pantruche.org/cpnext... Quebec Carnaval (has an English site as well) http://www.carnaval.qc.ca/ Other Travel Tips I'll leave the Canadian festivities with the excellent previous answer: In other Francophone countries: in the southern Belgian City of Binche carnaval is extensively celebrated by groups of dancers called "Les Gilles" wearing huge hats decorated with ostrich feathers and carrying baskets with oranges. They will start dancing at dawn on Mardi Gras (they must always go accompanied by a musician) and they finish in a grand finale on the market square at night, where they will throw oranges at anyone who is not wearing a mask or costume. In France the Carnaval de Nice with its historic Bataille des Fleurs (Flower Battle) is the most welknown and the most touristic and commercial. You can watch all these events on live TV on their respective national channels. |
