Travel Info What percentage of Finnish people, in Finland, speak English as well? Travel Tips It was surprisingly hard to find any good statistics about this. All the "unofficial" claims seem to say vaguely "more than a half" or give some kind of a figure over 60%. The most official looking figure I found said that in year 2000 an EU study stated that 68% of Finns speak at least one other language besides their native one. This figure naturally includes also all immigrants who have Finnish as their second language, and all Finns who speak Swedish. However, the really vast majority of the Finnish speaking people speaks English as their "first second language" because it's the one taught most in school (plus all the movies, internet etc. is mostly in English...). Naturally this statistic also counts out all those 8000 (picked this figure from another statistic) people living in Finland who speak native English and no other language... So, these figures would lead me to make an educated guess that nowadays something like 60% - 70% of the Finnish speaking Finns speak English. In cities and among young people this figure is considerably higher. I suppose the rest also know a word or two, or even speak English but don't admit it when asked (out of shyness or something else, that's also common here:)). I hope this helps. Other Travel Tips MORE THAN 70% I live in Finland and I can say that almost everyone here speaks English, at least to some extent. Especially young people speak English fluently. |
